A few years ago, my dear friend Gail handed me a artist trading card, and said "You might be interested in this."
That was the beginning of a long love affair with mail art and artist trading cards in particular. Artist Trading Cards ( ATCs) are little works of art that easily fit into an envelope and cost northing more than a first class stamp. They must be 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" - and that is virtually the only requirement. They are meant to be traded with other artists who are also making ATCs. What fun! In the last ten years, I have created literally thousands of them, and sent them off to all corners of the world. And in return, I have received wonderful little works of art from new friends in such places as Australia, Sweden, Scotland, and Israel. And of course, from everywhere in the US.
I began by trading through a website called "nervousness." And now I do most of my swaps through "Art 42" which is peopled by former friends from nervousness, and others.
If you do a search on Artist Trading Cards, you will find endless references.
These little chickens I painted with acrylic paint, and drew on with a Sharpie, on watercolor paper.
I kept these 3 for myself, and 3 others are in an envelope going out in today's mail. The "host" will collect all the ATCs from each participate, mix them up, and send me 3 from other artists.
I have 2 notebooks - so far - FULL of favorite ATCs I have collected. Sometimes the returns are not as good as you had hoped, but sometimes the little treasures will knock your socks off!
I hope the others will like my contribution to this "Cluck! Cluck!" swap! I do!
